FAQ: Loyola Law Student Volunteers
- Can I begin volunteering in the middle of the fall 2007 semester? You may begin volunteering in the middle of a semester if you have:
- Attended the Fall Orientation on September 7th
- Are committed to working 50 hours
- Enough time remains in the semester for you to complete 50 hours.
- How many hours per week will this occupy?: The time spent on cases varies—we recommend that you start with just a few cases and add cases as time allows throughout the semester.
- Can I work with the Katrina Clinic if I've never clerked in a firm before? Yes.
- What types of cases do you handle? The most common issues we see are related to: Contractor Fraud, FEMA, the Road Home Program, Homeowner's Insurance, Demolitions, and Foreclosures.
- Can I work from home? Yes. We have an internet-based case management system, so most of the time you do not have to do your work at school.
- Can I work on the Weekends and at Night? Yes.
- Can night students participate in the Katrina Clinic? Yes. Make sure you attend the September 7th Orientation or make special arrangements with a staff attorney if your job will not allow you to take time off. Client work does require that you spend time during the day working on cases; if you do not have enough time to fulfill the 50 hour requirement because you work during the day, please contact a staff attorney and ask about a “special project” for night students who want to volunteer with the Katrina Clinic.
