The Katrina Clinic's mission is to provide information, communicate on behalf of, and give legal assistance to individuals on hurricane related legal civil issues. Law student volunteers from Loyola and other law schools around the country as well as volunteer attorneys contribute to the Katrina Clinic.
The Katrina Clinic originated in the fall of 2005 when Loyola Law School and its Law Clinic were displaced in Houston, Texas. There, Law Clinic students and faculty, in association with Lone Star Legal Aid and the University of Houston, worked in Disaster Relief Centers to assist those displaced Katrina. Since the Spring of 2006, the Katrina Clinic has operated from the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law.
In working with the clinic, volunteers learn about a wide variety of post-disaster issues, and gain hands-on experience with practical skills such as: client intake interviews; communication with clients and opposing parties; research on factual and legal issues; drafting legal memoranda and other case-related documents; negotiation; litigation support and legislative advocacy. Students may also have the opportunity to have the attend and participate in mediations and hearings.
